Bối cảnh phim diễn ra trong thế giới giả tưởng của tương lai năm 2018, khi cuộc chiến của nhân loại với những cỗ máy hủy diệt do hệ thống máy tính thông minh siêu việt tên Skynet làm chủ. Sau khi âm mưu xóa sổ nhân loại trong hàng trăm vụ nổ hạt nhân, Skynet và binh đoàn hủy diệt của nó bắt đầu tiến hành chiến dịch truy quét và tàn sát những người sống sót.
John Connor sẽ mang sứ mệnh là người lãnh đạo loài người đứng lên đấu tranh như đã biết từ những tập trước, và chính anh đã cử người về quá khứ để bảo vệ mẹ anh – Sarah Connor và chính bản thân anh trước sự ám sát của những Kẻ hủy diệt được gửi từ tương lai đến, cũng như hủy diệt con chip thông minh mà sau này Skynet đã sử dụng để phát triển binh đoàn máy móc.
